The Mermaid of Zennor, carved in to

a seat in Zennor church Cornwall.

In the west of Cornwall there is a tale of:

The Mermaid of Zennor.

Mathew Trewella (a local fisherman of Zennor) sang in the choir at Zennor Church.  He was as handsome as an angel some said and when he sang it was supposedly like a harp from heaven.

A mermaid 'Morveren' sat upon rocks below Zennor and heard Mathew's wonderful voice as it drifted on the wind.

Entranced by his voice (and his looks) she lured him away to the undersea kingdom of her father and there (to this day no doubt) there they live still.

Never again were Mathew and Morveren seen by the people of Zennor. They had gone to live in the land of Llyr, far below the waters of the ocean.

Mathew's voice can still be heard some say, wafting to ears on the sea breezes and enchanting those who can hear him sing.
